Garmin recently released the inReach mini and thought it was pretty cool. Anyone use anything similar?

    $349 on Amazon

I use the full inReach Explorer one because it has the GPS and Map function and have taken some classes on how to to use the dang thing through REI.

I am not sure what the benefit of the mini is over the SE for about the same money, other than size. It seems like it’s marketed to appeal to the Spot crowd what is familiar with that small footprint?

@Cuchulainn Ah gotcha. Thanks for the insight and will look into the full inReach explorer.

It is really small, so if size is the primary factor it has its appeal. It also integrates with some of Garmin’s wearables, so if you own any of these it may also have some appeal over the full size units.

But it does seem to be targeted mostly at the Spot user, who is used to the limited functionality and small form factor. It also seems to gave some shortcomings compared to Spot in terms of price and battery life...

I think if most people moving from Spot to inReach are doing it for what inReach offers, that Spot does not. So I would think for most the question would be SE+ vs Explorer

Conversely, while Garmin has announced a small foot print, less featured device to compete with Spot Messenger it appears Spot has gone the opposite route and announced a two-way device to compete with Garmin.
