Recommended Oil for Honda Africa Twin

Discussion in 'Africa Twin Tech Tips' started by SeaEngine, Aug 14, 2017.

  1. Found this from the service manual and hope this can be used as a quick reference.

    RECOMMENDED ENGINE OIL:
Honda "4-stroke motorcycle oil" or an equivalent
    motor oil.
API service classification: SG or higher
    JASO T903 standard: MA
    Viscosity: SAE 10W-30

    ENGINE OIL CAPACITY:
    CRF1000/A:
3.9 liter (4.1 US qt, 3.4 Imp qt) at draining
4.1 liter (4.3 US qt, 3.6 Imp qt) at oil filter change
4.9 liter (5.2 US qt, 4.3 Imp qt) at disassembly

    CRF1000D:
4.0 liter (4.2 US qt, 3.5 Imp qt) at draining
4.2 liter (4.4 US qt, 3.7 Imp qt) at oil filter change
5.2 liter (5.5 US qt, 4.6 Imp qt) at disassembly

  2. And remember there are two drainage plugs. If you only use the one plug, you will find the bike does not take the oil volume indicated, but will end up with about 600ml too much in the engine

  3. That's right! Thank you @Squily!

  4. I put a gallon of Rotella t6 in last week. No problems yet.

  5. I've been using Maxima Pro Plus+ for awhile and have been very happy with it. I've been disappointed that I haven't been able to find the filters on Amazon. :-(

  6. Just a note - The dealer where I bought my bike said if you don't use Honda's recommended oil choice then this could valid the warranty should a fault occur oil related. If self serviced to keep the receipts as proof of recommended parts used. A bit nit picky I know but you know what they're like when it comes to expensive warranty repairs. Don't shoot the messenger :)

  7. @OneEarTim I found the HiFlo Filter on Amazon

A list of oil filters can be found at this thread here: https://www.africatwin.org/threads/africa-twin-oil-filter-list.535/

I'll copy and paste it here for convenience purposes. Hope Amazon carries some of these and safe riding!

  8. Ya, good points. I was a Mechanic and Service Manager at a Honda dealer for awhile and was able to see how it really works legally and in reality. As you basically said, legally nothing can void your warranty. But, something can be deemed un-unwarrantable due to something we've done or not done. You mentioned the two key ways to cover yourself when self servicing your bikes. Use the proper rated oil based on their recommendations/requirements and keep proof of purchase for your oil and filters. I've always written the mileage and date on the receipt and filed it away. I've personally seen major warranties questioned and covered with FAR less "proof" than I keep.

  9. Thanks for the info. I should have mentioned that my struggle is to find the DCT filter. I can get oil and the engine spin on filter on amazon but not the trans/DCT filter. :-(

  12. The list of JASO MA certified oils is really short. Note: Honda GN4 is not MA rated.

I have run Rotella for years in my bikes and have never had any issues. Their new version of T4 is MA rated in 15w40, but only JASO DH-2 (diesel rating) in the 10w30. I am going with the T4 10w30 with confidence that the reason it isn't MA rated in the 10w30 is because Shell didn't take the time and money to get it rated, given 10w30 is not a high volume viscosity.

  13. @Mitch Can you explain to an amateur the significance of JASO MA ratings? Does it prolong the components inside the engine better than a non JASO MA rated oil? Interesting stuff.

  14. I too am an amateur, but I have read through quite a few long and argumentative oil threads, and I have also taken the time to familiarize myself with the API and JASO ratings.

Probably the best site I could direct you to is located at http://www.oilspecifications.org/articles/JASO_MA_JASO_MB.php

It does a nice job of explaining how the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (a bunch of Japanese petroleum engineering geeks) set standards for modern lubricants to meet the heavy demands of today's modern engines.

The only other note I'll make is in line with what I posted before. Just because Rotella T4 10w30 is not JASO MA certified does not mean it is not JASO MA compliant. Given 10w30 is not nearly as big a seller as 10w40, 15w40 or 20w50 I will guess that Shell simply did not submit their 10w30 for certification. I don't know what it costs, but I suspect it isn't cheap. Given T4 is formulated the same way, I will assume that the 10w30 would be MA compliant if tested. Further I will note that although the demands on a diesel engine are clearly different than those on a higher rev'ing 4 cycle motorcycle engine, both take a lot of abuse. Most diesel engines are work engines that run long hours under heavy loads. Thus, the JASO DH-2 rating, although different than MA, is certainly a good measure of oil durability.....But again, it is different. I am not suggesting otherwise.

Last thing.......Here is an oil finder tool that is located on that same site.
    http://www.oilspecifications.org/oiltool/oiltool.php
If you go to the bottom you can select the certification that you want to search. Find the JASO MA certification and search for compliant oils. The list is short. Given Rotella T4 15w40 is not in that list, but is listed as JASO MA on the Rotella site, tells me that their database is not 100% accurate. But I assume it captures most of them. Could be a bad assumption.

    Hope this helps.
